Sense, understand, act, learn: the governed enterprise agent loop
A four-stage model for turning fragmented enterprise context into safe execution and reusable intelligence after every approved run.

A simple model for a complex system
Enterprise agents operate across information, decisions, tools, people, and systems. The loop can be explained in four stages: Sense, Understand, Act, and Learn.
The stages are not a claim of uncontrolled autonomy. Each stage is constrained by identity, permissions, policy, evidence, and human review.
1. Sense the context
The agent needs access to the relevant systems, documents, assets, structured records, business objects, and decision traces. BasilAOS prepares that context in Library and through approved connectors while preserving provenance and permission boundaries.
Sensing is not copying everything into one undifferentiated index. It means making the right context available to the right user and agent for the task at hand.
2. Understand the workflow
A business request becomes a reproducible process when its tasks, inputs, rules, source requirements, output format, review gates, tools, and success criteria are explicit.
Studio encodes that logic through typed variables, retrieval, model calls, condition branches, code, HTTP requests, connectors, Library operations, Smart Tables, triggers, and output parsers.
3. Act with guardrails
The agent can generate an artifact, call a skill, request approval, update metadata, create a record, or write back to a system. The permitted action depends on runtime permissions, workflow policy, validation, and the current user’s access.
Deterministic rails are especially important for approvals, compliance checks, data jobs, and system updates. Creative reasoning can remain flexible where the risk is lower.
4. Learn from approved use
The system records accepted outputs, edits, rejected recommendations, exceptions, source choices, approval decisions, and human rationale. After governance and evaluation, these signals can improve context, templates, evaluation sets, and policy.
This is governed enterprise evolution, not an agent silently retraining itself or changing the process without authorization.
The loop becomes company capability
The completed artifact returns to Library with provenance. The workflow remains versioned in Studio. The run and approval remain visible in Admin. The employee continues through Workbench. The next run begins with more usable company context than the previous one.
Sense, Understand, Act, Learn is the operating loop that turns isolated agent output into compounding enterprise capability.
